I took this photograph on a rare day when I told myself I was not going to take any photographs. It was supposed to be my day to observe and just take things in without a camera. I was walking on the beach in California and saw her lying there alone but not lonely. I saw this angle in my mind before the lens and ended up taking one of my favorite photographs of the year

Sometimes I take a photograph and don’t realize/see the beauty for months. This is a photograph shot on film in my old studio in Brooklyn. The more I look at this picture the more I am thankful that I pressed the button on the camera just when I was supposed to. The lens becomes filled with sunlight + yellow

I took this photo while in Venice Beach, California. I was on my way to take pics of a friend (see “california pinks+reds” in the girls+dreams section) and took a wrong turn. I ended up in front of a perfect combination of shapes,colors,fruits and flowers. I love the edge of this image and the magical blue shape. Just pretty and makes me happy

One of my first nights in Rincon, Puerto Rico. Mesmerized by the waves and sunset. It is hard to believe that two things so beautiful can exist together. I used straight film for this image, as I really wanted to capture the fine mist of the wave in front of the setting sun. When the sun went down on the beach…..the entire beach was applauding,

Not trying to make art…just shooting the beauty outside of a window in Peru and realizing it’s beauty 3 years later looking at it with fresh eyes in New York

So here’s the story……….. Before immersing myself in photography I was immersed in music. I had a $1200 guitar handmade guitar, that I loved. I recorded a record with it and went on tour with it. A few years later the most expensive/beautiful item I ever bought had gotten banged around too much and was declared “broken beyond repair”

My goal…….to make beauty out of something broken

The plan….Bring my guitar to Puerto Rico and throw it around nature and the ocean

I began throwing it into turquoise waters and photographing it floating and then being pounded by waves. After a day or two on the beach, the back of the guitar was cracked and falling apart. I took off the back and photographed most of the trip through the hole in the guitar. It began with strings and was soon just the front shell of a guitar.

Surfing at sunset at Maria’s beach in Rincon, PR. Each layer of the ocean tells a different story. Drenched in warm yellows. I can only imagine what this surfer was feeling. Riding through sunlight. Almost hidden, which makes him more visible.
